Dry AMD is the more common form and progresses slowly. It involves the gradual breakdown of light sensitive cells in the macula. Wet AMD is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid, causing rapid vision loss. Early detection of dry AMD is critical to prevent conversion to wet.

There is currently no cure for AMD, but treatment options can slow progression and, in the case of wet AMD, help preserve vision. VEGF inhibitor injections are highly effective for wet AMD. For dry AMD, AREDS2 supplements, lifestyle changes, and regular monitoring are the primary management strategies.
